Lessons, training, and clinics

I teach and train using natural horsemanship with additional positive reinforcements techniques. Read about my teaching and training approach. I offer:

  • private and semi-private lessons at either my ranch or at your home or facility.
  • clinics/mini-clinics on various topics such as despooking, trail training, and natural horsemanship.
  • Horse/colt starting or restarting - I do work with mustangs.
If I travel to you, I do have an hourly travel charge in addition to the lesson/training fee.

Foundation training for you and your horse

My definition of foundation training is everything you and your horse needs to know before participating in horse activities from trail riding to competition. This training covers all the basics from ground work to riding. I emphasis safety, understanding and reading the horse, effective techniques and building confidence. Contact me for more information about lessons or training.

C.H.A.P.S. Trail Riding Preparedness System and School

C.H.A.P.S. stands for all the ingredients necessary for safe and successful trail rides - communication, horsemanship, awareness, planning and preparedness, and safety. This school is appropriate for:

  • people that have been arena riders and want to start trail riding
  • people that have tried trail riding and haven't been as successful as they wanted
  • people that have ridden on trail successfully, but want safer, more responsive horses

The school consists of four clinics spaced 2-3 weeks apart (giving students time to practice) followed by followup trail rides:

  • Clinic #1 teaches good ground skills and applying them to trail obstacles
  • Clinic #2 teaches all the riding necessities such as emergency stops, rating gaits, riding with balance, etc.
  • Clinic #3 is a despooking clinic, desensitizing horses both from the ground and riding
  • Clinic #4 puts it all together. We cover many topics including trail etiquette, riding together as a team, preparing for a ride, safety strategies, etc.
  • Follow up trail rides are offered to graduates of the school clinics. These mini trail clinics take students to varied and increasingly difficult trails to help them progressively build confidence and address problems encountered on the trail.

2008 will be the 3rd year we are offering this very successful trail riding school. Many graduates enjoy retaking the school each year AND for half price! Graduates are also eligible for followup trail ride mini-clinics held on the wonderful local trails to provide them ongoing support and coaching. Contact me to sign up for the 2008 schools.

Troop Riding School

There is something very satisfying about riding in synchronisity with other riders. This school will start with teaching the horsemanship necessary to ride in a troop. Once the horsemanship is in place, then we will begin riding as a troop in interesting and more challenging patterns. Should be great fun! Contact me for more info.

Despooking your Horse

Despooking is a system of desensitizing a horse to all the objects and situations that scare them, helping them become calmer and braver. When I teach despooking I expose students to the horse psychology behind spooking and despooking, and effective techniques both from the ground and saddle. Contact me to arrange despooking clinics or lessons.

Game Days and Shows.

Playing games on horseback can be great fun! If you have a group of people that want to play or you want to put on a series of Game Shows, contact me. I can produce or manage your game day or show. I have many creative and fun games for individual and group participants. I always emphasis safety and horsemanship.

Coaching for horsemanship programs

Are you involved in learning a horsemanship program? If yes, I can help you by providing coaching lessons. Coaching is an important source of feedback, helping you solve problems that might come up, and keeping you on track. Contact me to arrange coaching lessons.

Fear Management and Confidence Building

Like many of us, as we get older we are more likely to develop a fear of working with our horses on the ground or riding. Most fear originated from an incident where we were hurt working with our horses. I can help you either overcome or manage your fears and build your confidence with horses. Knowing how to approach fear in a thinking, step-by-step manner, and developing your horsemanship can really help build your confidence. Contact me if you need help with this.

Boarding at Free Spirit RanchLLC

Enjoy boarding your horse in this beautiful location. At the ranch, we use the most natural boarding methods we can, based on this high desert climate. Stalls and runs are roomy and airy, and daily pasture turnout is provided. Lessons, training, and clinics are offered on site. View this document for details of boarding at FSR. Educational demos and speaking

If your organization is looking for an horse-related educational demo or guest speaker, please contact me. Topics can range from natural horsemanship to communicating with your horse.

Buying a horse

Finding the right horse can be difficult. We've all done this: we purchase the first horse we think is gorgeous. But there is so much more to consider. I offer an assessment service, which includes accompaning you to view horses you may be interested in and providing you with an assessment of the horse's temperament and training level. Contact me if you need this service.

Basics of Driving

Driving your horse in a cart around the countryside can be very appealing. However, make sure you are prepared - driving can be very dangerous if you not. These are the basic ingredients I teach:

  • creating a calmer and braver horse through desensitization
  • proper ground game warmups
  • developing a responsive horse to rein and voice cues - you must be able to stop your horse!
  • ground driving
  • applying the harness and tack
  • pulling a drag
  • pulling a cart in an arena

Contact me for lessons.
